The 19th Century cartoonist Thomas Nast came up with the animals. The colors were for TV maps during Presidential elections, and they really have to all match since people channel-surf on Election Night. Back in 1976, at least one network had the Democrats in red for Carter and Republicans in Blue for Ford. But since then they have synchronized.

the us parties don't have any official colors.

the red and blue are given to them by the newspapers when they print the election maps. they usually change depdending on the party of the current president. although now everyone has gotten used to the idea of "blue states" and "red states". They are not official colors though.

In other countries, political parties usually have colors. usually the liberal parties are red, and the conservative parties are blue. People from Canada and the UK think the "red state/blue state" thing in the US is backwards.
