an epic poem is a long narrative poem telling of a hero's deeds/travels, etc.

think of the odyssey - by homer...that recounts Odysseus' travels home after the war...

An epic is a narrative in which the main character, who is the Hero, begins a journey of finding himself, and defeating those who are in opposition to him!
