There's no retractable roof. The place is almost forty years old for christ's sake. And the "god looking down on his favorite team" thing? Come on! The stadium was built this way so that spectators would be relatively protected from the elements while the field itself would still be affected by heat, cold, wind and rain and/or snow.

The body release body heat. When people concentrate on a small place, you could just imagine the heat release by the number of people present. Hot air tends to go up while cold air goes down. That is the purpose of the hole. It'll be easier for the heat to dissiminate in the atmosphere if it has a vent to go. It help keeps the temparature inside the stadium at a tolerable level.
