So, as we approach the 26th anniversary of Steve McQueen's death, I find myself wondering what may have been had he not passed in 1980.
I wonder, would he have conitnued to make movies after the production of THE HUNTER in 1980, or would he have disappeared from the spotlight again? Would his career have mirrored that of Clint Eastwood, moving him into production and direction while starring in a few choice pictures, or would he have grown like Paul Newman and continued acting into old age? What are your thoughts, out there?
Please, as with my other questions, do not answer sarcastically. If you don't have any thoughts on this subject, then pass on answering rather than boosting your point score.
Thank you.

An intriguing question and one with so many variables as to the answers that I'll not venture into the what ifs and focus instead upon what would be absolute certainty, that being passion.
Passion was what made the man. It was with passion that he approached each and every day, passion which fueled the fire to perform at the highest level no matter what the task at hand, be it acting, racing or simply living life.
Many, once they reach a certain level, will 'dabble' in various activities, picking up and laying down hobbies at a whim, simple amusements afforded to those for whom success has been achieved. Not so with McQueen. He pursued his hobbies with one objective, that being to excel, to be the best he could possibly be regardless of personal danger, always striving and always with passion.
How many know of his talent aboard a motorcycle? His passion and proficiency won him a spot on the US team in the 60's, pitting him against the best the world had to offer in the most grueling off road event to be had. This was no guest spot, some trumped up cameo by a celeb for naught but a photo op (not that he would ever accept such!) No, this was a position earned, his by right as one of the finest off road racers this country could field.
That same passion was the force behind his immeasurable talent on the big screen as well, an palpable aura that drew legions of fans. Women wanted him and men wanted to be him, his charm and ability putting him on a plateau far beyond mere actors. The man was real, of that there was no doubt.
And that leads us to today. Would he still act? Direct? Race? Perhaps he would simply revel in the company of his contemperaries, pursuing his own agenda for the sheer joy of it all. Whatever the answer the one certainty we have is this it would be be done passion.

I think Steve McQueen's stardom was solid... he would have continued to act and make some blockbusters. He possibly might have directed, but I saw McQueen as loving his craft. Who can forget him in "The Cincinnati Kid" or even "The Blob"? So I think he would have been much more like Paul Newman... aging... and perhaps even being the philanthropist that Newman is today. Who knows? They both might have been competing to see who donated more to charities.

Hi The Doctor,

There are a lot of Steve McQueen fans out there. They would have insisted that he continue on with his movie career. There's no telling where he would have gone.

I agree with on the wagon. Since he died young, he has remained a handsome icon.
