Someone has been writing to me lately. I think he is one of my friends...is there a way I can discover his identity via his IP adress? Is there a way I can compare his emails to the ones of this stranger?

You can check the email headers. I think you can just right click on the message itself and select "View Headers". If not, it's buried in one of the menus.

Examine the e-mail headers. It will show the IP address where the e-mail came from. However, that won't do much to identify the actual sender. You'd need a subpoena or a court order to get that information from the ISP.

Do a search for WHOIS.

Enter the IP address info from the expanded header of the email.

Contact the ISP and request the information (you may need a court order to do so).

you can look at the MIME headers in the emails to get a rough idea of where the emails are coming from.

Usually under yahoo and hotmail (and most other clients) this is under the "Options" link. You may have to search a bit to find it.

No, an IP address has to do with the modem, not a person's identity.

Sorry everyone, ALL email headers can be faked. Ever get a spam email from yourself?
