absolutely NOT! A rat should be kept in a cage that is fit for a ferret. Adult male rats can be kept in ferrett cages, but females cannot. Females need a cage with smaller spacing between the bars, since they can squeeze themselves out of a ferret cage. Martin's Cages specialize in cages made just for rats. Please, do not keep your pet rat in a hamster cage, or a tank. Also, try to have more than one rat (of the same sex) as they are very social animals and need companions.

Also do not use pine shavings like someone else posted. Use carefresh, yesterdays news, or you can use Aspen shavings. My mom bought pine instead of aspen when I was on vacation and I came home to rats with respiratory problems.

well, they might fit, but some rats get pretty big, and they need more space than a hamster. They also are very smart and socail-I had a rat that was hands-down the best pet I've ever taken care of-she loved to hang out outside of her cage and spend time with people. Give your rat some toys and tubes that are ferret-sized, like suggested earlier, and take him or her out often to play.

A baby rat would probably be able to fit in a hamster cage/tubes, but you must remember that rats grow very quickly. They will not be able to fit for long, so it is probably not a good idea to do it. Rats are very curious creatures and they will require a lot of room to run around and a lot of contact! They thrive on human contact, and are able to learn 'tricks' if you are willing to put in the time.

Ferret Cage With Tubes

Rats would not only be too big to enjoy the cage full grown, but they are also notorious for chewing through plastic in record time. I would either get a rat with another cage, or get a hamster for that cage.

No. Certainly not. A rat cage should be as big as possible, rats need plenty of room to explore. Ferret tubes are the right size for rats too.

I don't think a cage that small would be a good idea, but if a rat can get its head into a tube, it can compress its whole body to get in. Whether it would, I can't tell you.

if your rat is small enough, yes. a hamster cage with the tubing will offer it plenty of room. i am assuming this will be temporary, because rats do get to be fairly big as far as rodents go. i would suggest putting toys in with it, i.e., balls with bells in them. also don't use cedar for bedding. use pine shavings.
