A few things...
1. Check the volume.
2. Check the battery level.
3. Check to see if the headphone is plugged in all the way.
4. Make sure you have songs on the iPod. Check via iTunes.

if you have plugged your ipod into another comp. w/i tunes i can rip the songs off your ipod so you wont have any that could be the problem. sometimes if you push pause and then turn it off it has a hard time starting up again. your volume could also be down.
