What did the british call " the jewel in the crown"? Why?

I think it might be India, the "crown" referring to the British Empire,
and India being called the most precious possession of Britain.
The reason might be the fabled wealth, which after all was why Columbus was seeking it, when he discovered America by accident. Or it might be the historical depth of civilization.

The answer would be India...Which, just to confuse you, currently comprises modern India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Nepal.

Why was it called that? It was the largest of the British colonies.
