A 17 month old is old enough to learn that just because he is awake doesn't mean he gets to get out of bed or needs to wake everyone else up. He can learn to play quietly and perhaps sooth himself back to sleep. The same when he wakes in the night could be because he is going through normal changes in sleep patterns...You have to be firm with him, don't pick him up if he is fussy, go in quietly and tell him it's not time to get up yet, leave the room and let him fuss a bit if necessary. He'll learn very quickly.

I'm a mom of 2 older kids now and helped a lot with my 8 younger siblings and this always works.

I have a book you must read!!!!!! It works for everyone that i have recommended it to. a woman I work with couldn't get her son to sleep and he is 15 months old, i bought the book for her, she read it a week ago and now her son is sleeping 12-13 hours a night. my daughter sleeps from 7pm - 8am. but you need to read it and understand it. then you need to stick with it.
It is called Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child by Dr. Weissbluth. It runs about $15.00 at Barnes and Noble
*DO NOT put them to bed later, if anything, put them to sleep an hour earlier, part of the reason they aren't sleeping well is because they are overtired.

Keep your room dark, and when he wake up...try to give him a bottle of milk....and stay at the room...(i always prepare the bottle and milk before i get sleep. I already fill the bottle with water, and put the milk at the milk container, so when my son wake up in the night, i don't need to turn on the lamp to make the milk)

when he wakes up, do not pick him up unless you think he is wet or other. If you do not want him up by 530 then leave him in bed. He will come to know that when it turns 6, it is time he can get up.

I have one eleven year old and twin seven year olds....they still wake up in the middle of the night sometimes. Have you tried putting him to bed a little later? Also, there are tapes of music with heartbeats in the background that helped when our kids were younger.
