In turn, the city influences the surrounding area as a supplier of goods and as the determiner of artistic and cultural life.

Well, if you've got a country with lots of mountains, you'll probably have less people living there... on the other hand, if you have a country with lots of good farmland, you'll probably have more people there. Hope that helps.
