Well, you can't really type up a short answer for what is the meaning of anything. But what I got from that book was that as a minority, you must have an exterior self to show to the world of the majority and interior (truer self) that you expose to your own people or those you feel that will not judge based on race/class/creed/ethnicity. It goes much further but that is the essence.

If you're looking for ONE meaning, you're on the wrong track!
It's all about the diversity of voices, of experiences.
The only one meaning you can be looking for is "the veil", that's the only dogma in this book.
