Boot up the old system, and look at the Board Bios number that is on the lower left (usually). That will go into a search engine like on google.com and take you to the bios number websites that will tell you who made the board.

When it's bios was most recently written is the date there on screen. If it won't boot the first time, just pull all power, and the battery, after about a minute, reinstall battery, then apply power.

If it won't boot, pull the IDE cables off the mainboard, and pull the modem, ethernet card, and any other accessory peripherals, except videol... and, yes, bad memory, cpu, or video card can prevent startup.

At this point, if it is running, I only hook up the CDrom, or DVD rom and run http://pclinuxos.com so that I can get more info, form DMESG (the hardware log file) in a console.

This question/statement is less than helpful.
Perhaps if you actually asked a question with detail an' all.
Ya know?
