First of all, let me say that I'm certainly biased. My dad is an officer in his local union, and works for a company that is very anti-union.

That said, I think people join unions in order to protect themselves when they feel that management might try to take advantage of them. Specifically in regards to wages, benifits, and employee safety.

People don't join unions in many places because they may feel that the union is corrupt, or that the dues are too high.

Things that management can do, well they could be willing to have open discussions with employees about what changes are being made during contract negotiations. Is the company really looking out for the employees, or are they only looking out for their pocketbooks.

Training, benefits, security, pension plans and the main reason is collective bargaining. Unions were at the forefront of demanding safe working conditions for people in dangerous professions like coal mining. Before the unions, many more died in mine accidents, and most eventually developed black lung disease from not having safety equipment and breathing coal dust. The unions also made sure that if a man lost his life in the mines, the company would make sure the widow and children did not end up on the street. Those not in a union can lose a job or benefits at any time. If a company decides no raises and the CEO takes home billions, tough luck. Many unions require a competency test to make sure a person has the appropriate skills to be part of the union. This is true of plumbers and pipe fitters. They must complete a course of training and be licensed before they can practice. If you hire a union plumber, you will know they have taken all of the appropriate training and passed their proficiency test. With a non-union plumber, you have no idea how competent he is.

Explain to your employees that under collective bargaining that the union picks and chooses their health coverage and that under union contract the only thing a union guarantees is more money taken out of their checks for union dues. What I have found is that by sitting down with your employees asking them what they would like to see changed in the workplace show them that you care and that they are just not a number helps them be loyal to your needs give them the tools they need to do the job

Mainly because of, what they believe is unfair treatment, or long hours,.,. a way to resolve this would be to gather up the workers, and discuss what you could do to create a better environment for them to work in.,.,
