Anything to the zero power equals 1 because raising something to the zero power is the same as dividing a number by itself.
Here's a more detailed explanation:

This is because if you have a pattern such as:
6^3: 216
6^2: 36
6^1: 6
6^0: 1
1 would fit in the patter because each time you are dividing by six, or whatever your base is from in your power. So with 5 as the base, in each time you build the powers, you are multiplying by six, so to go down in the pattern, you are dividing by 5.
So every base to the power of 0 is equal to 1 because it fits in the pattern of each time, the value of the power is divided by the base when going down in the pattern.

You would agree that 125 / 125 = 1 right! Well 125 is 5^3 and 5^3 / 5^3 = 5 ^0 by division of powers rule. (Subtract the exponents). So by substitution 5^0 = 1 . Its just that easy.
