There are different types of meteorologists and it could take between 2-4+ years of schooling. It really depends of the experience you would get, and what type of meteorology you would plan on studying.

I graduated from the University of OK a few years ago with my degree in Metr. It generally takes 4 years (or more) to get a QUALITY education in meteorology. The Top Schools are the University of Oklahoma, Penn State, Texas A&M, and Florida, among others. It really depends on what your focus is- severe wx? OU. Winter wx? Penn State. Tropical Weather? Florida.

Make sure you're good at math and physics, it's grueling.

Back in WWII there was a sudden acute demand for meteorologists and it was all seat-of-the-pants forecasting; no computers. They recruited people with no academic qualifications and spent a few months training them. During the 1950s they started looking for geography, physics and maths graduates and training them. In 1974 I used my physics degree to join the met. service and complete a year's training. This included training in computer programming. Now, they're looking for guys with either a meteorology degree or information technology qualifications or both.

You need to get a Bachelor of Science Degree in meteorology.
It all depends on how long you want to go to school. You can get a Master's or Doctorate if you want. But first thing is first. You must obtain the Bachelor of Science Degree. I hope I help you out.
