FYI, the title is "Bench Coach", not "Bench Manager". Basically, he acts as the 2nd in command - the Vice Manager, if you will. During games, he serves as a someone for the Manager to discuss ideas with, and he'll frequently also keep track of stats and other information the manager might need. Outside the game, he handles a lot of the administrative and logistical aspects of the manager's job (running batting practice, etc.). When the Manager is kicked out of a game or has to miss it for some reason, the Bench Coach is the one who manages the team in his absence.

He's like the manager's "best man". He is usually an experienced baseball guy, a guy who has often been a manager in the minors or college and has very good knowledge of the game and team.
