Before 1948, there was only Palestine where palestinians (including Muslims, Jews & Christians) lived. In 1948, the British decided to give the Jews a home of their own because they felt sorry for the Jews who had suffered the holocaust and there was not a single country belonging to the Jews alone. So the British, who had conquered Palestine in the world war, gave Jews the green signal to start moving to Palestine where they created Israel. The homes and the lands of the Palestinians were given away to the Jews. Please keep in mind that it is not a conflict between Jews & Palestinians (because before 1948 both Jewish & Muslim Palestinians lived together)... the conflict is between the Zionists & the Pelestinians. In the later years, Palestinians resorted to terrorism to get back their land while the West (including the USA) gave military help to Israel... so when there were wars, the Palestinians had no weapons while the Jews grabbed more & more of the Palestinian lands because of its military weapons.

In 1948 Britain gave Palestine (now called Israel) to the Jews. It was called the Balfour Treaty. They were going to give the Jews Cyprus but the International Jewish Commission (not sure of their exact title) refused and said it had to be Palestine. Because of what the Jews had endured during the 2nd WW, the World felt guilty and gave in to international pressure to take Palestine away from the Palestinians and give it to the Jews. Hence the State of Israel was born and with it the troubles that have been going on ever since! Good luck with your homework.
