the cooks feel we are making too much money but they make more per hour.




cooks make more per hour than we do but also want us to tip them. Is this legal?

I'm not sure where you are writing from but I am in Canada and I assure you it it completely legal to tip out the cooks. If it is just a matter of the cooks demanding to be tipped out you don't have to do it. In most restaurants in Canada the management requires waitress to tip out the cooks based on their sales , then you have to do it if you want your job. I work for an American business in Canada so I am not required to tip out anyone. My opinion on tipping out is " If you want to do it because the cook, dishwasher, busser, hostess, or anyone else really helped you make more tips than you could have done by yourself, then its your choice to tip them out. I also think that if an employer thinks that an employee should make more money then he should give him a raise.

It is totally "house policy" on this one!!
I don't mind tipping out the busser and host staff as I always appreciate the help.
Cooks apply for a cooks position and they DO NOT deal with the 100's of people we do each day/night. They have about 4-10 people to deal with total!!

Doesnt matter where you are! You dont tip the cooks. Sounds like they have got a bit of a racket going. If you are inn the US just say no! It is not right..... they make a wage and you don't. Sounds like intimidation and I bet not everybody has too. I am curious as to what kind of place you work. If you are in the US email me because I've seen this stupid stuff before.

Oh give me a break!! Cooks do make more an hour than we do, and I don't think we should tip them. Besides, if there are 6 on line during one night shift, we're expected to tip them all?! In my restaurant we tip the bussers and bartenders, but I'm really fed up with having to tip our stupid bartenders so much!! If they actually made drinks for me instead of me having to get them myself, I wouldn't mind.

No, you never tip a cook, they should be smart enough to make management pay them a living wage.

Front of the house depends on tips, don't let those cooks take the $ away from you!

i have never, ever , tipped a cook! you normally tip the busboy if you have one working with you, or put a percentage of your tips into the busboy pool jar, this should be 10% of what you make in tips,,, some resturants do not have the standard tipping busboys, you only tip them if they do extra work/help for you , so no, tipping a cook is not the standard, at same time, if the cook develops a dislike for you, they can ruin your food or your service time,,,,,, i personally would look for another job if a cook asked for tips, they do make much more then you, so do the busboys , i mean in salary ,,

Sounds like you work with some a**holes. Tell the front of the house manager that a cook wants you to tip him. I'm sure your boss will be on your side.

I always let my waitresses keep their own tips, because they also bussed their own tables. I did work at a place once were it was "highly encouraged" to tip the busboy and dishwasher after a banquet. In other words, fork over five bucksto each. Even though I was at $3.19 and the busboy and dishwasher were making $6.00.

It wasn't required persay, but "highly encouraged" if you wanted to keep your job. The owner was a total a**.

Was a server at Red Lobster for a long time, we tipped out the bartenders. No matter what shift, lunch or dinner, 2% of the bar bill!

It would be according to the restaurant's policy. Here's a tip for the cooks, hop the steam table of you think it's better over here!
