Classification of Igneous rocks:
1. Texture: whether the rock is glassy, vesicular, pegmatitic, aphanitic, phaneritic, etc, etc (forgot the other types of texture).
2. Minerals composition: find out what types of minerals are in the rock.
3. If you want to know what type of Igneous rock is it, use the Igneous Rocks Classification Chart.

Good luck on this ****...classifying rocks is the most retarded thing (as least for me).

Grain size, color, mineralogy, texture. Depending on the answers to the preceding criteria I arrive at a reasonable answer. I always have an idea of where this rock fits (or if it doesn't fit) on Bowen's Reaction Series.
