Scan the printouts with SimpleOCR. It's a free Optical Character Recognition program that will transcript them into text. You'll have to clean up the resulting text, but it will save you hours of work.

I suppose you have checked your hard drive to see if you can find it.
Perhaps in future you could get AutoRecover to save files automatically and to save your work every few minutes.
It is a hard lesson and it's too bad Mum has to stay up all night.
I think the only way you can manipulate text in pdf document is if you have the expensive version of Adobe Reader.
A search for recover file not saved did come up with some resources but -- the are not free!
Best of luck with your dilemma!

Most scanners these days have OCR (Optical Character Recognition), otherwise you can download the software online. OCR converts pictures as text into editable text format.
Remember to set "Autosave" in your text editing program. Are you SURE that the file (or part of it) is not saved, just in a directory where he can't find it? You can search the harddisk for all files changed within the last day or if he can remember part of the title, he should have a shot.

Possibly you can try to 'restoring' your computer to to a time when a lot of his work was being produced and take it from there. It may end up being a long typing out job. I am sure he will now save as he works - and of course note the SAVE name.

Your scanning software should include a "save as text" program or choice. If he knows everything, maybe I shouldn't be answering this. Why are you doing his work for him if he knows it all?

There may be a way to save it as a PDF document if you have a scanner/printer like lexmark or HP. If not, I would make HIM retype it AFTER he sits and learns how to save properly.

I have scanned hard copy to a pdf file and then did select all and copy, and then pasted into word.
Perhaps you can give that a try.
