Most of my friends refer to Cambridge as "The Peoples' Republic of Cambridge". This is so because it is chock full with liberal thinking intellectuals who appear to advocate Socialism!

I wouldn't call it slang, but many call it "the people's republic of Cambridge" because of all the rules and regulations they have about everything.
