I worked collecting money for Pizza Hut when people's checks would bounce. It wasn't that bad. I guess because most of the people generally realized they owed the money. And the amounts on average was like $80 (fees included) which isn't that bad.
My friend collected for a credit card company and hated it. People got short with her and cursed her out.
You can't be timid or (overly) emotional about it. You have to understand that its a job and that you are not the one at fault.
Be firm but polite and you'll be ok.
I think most people get defensive when you call defensively and start making threats.
Let's be realistic... will threatening to take someone to court over a $120 credit card balance be worthwhile? It will take that much in court fees to get them to court to sue them! And most people who are several payments behind already have bad credit so that is an useless argument as well.
Good luck!

This is the best advice you will ever get about the job, and I can guarantee almost everyone with agree with me on this one.

Everyone Lies.

Your job will not be collecting bills. It will be sorting through heaps of people personal 'BS' and finding out truth like a mini-detective. Treat everyone the same and always assume they are lieng no matter how sweet or nice they are, or how many kids they have. You have to be willing to take away money from anyone no matter what their situation is, and do it in a way that is almost close to harrasment. If you are a very sensitive person I would say this isnt the job for you, but if you have very thick skin and dont mind throwing someone out in the gutter then go for it. And remember its their fault for getting in debt not yours.

Some people you talk to won't be nice. Be prepared to be cursed out or deal with very rude people. I'd never do it again.

It's a difficult job if you don't have thick skin and a killer instinct.
