I have 384 mb ram on an 701 mg processor. I am running Norton Suite, business application and a few games. The task manager shows 50+ processes and the CPU @100%

Thanks for any suggestions

Step 1:
Get hijackthis, it is a free spyware and virus search tool that will help you clean out your computer. Download from:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.h...
let it run scan, delete the problems it finds and you will be set. hope this helps, spyware is the worst, annoying, and it slows down your computer I bet at least 10-15 of those processes are hidden spyware processes and will be eliminated by it. Don't use spybot like the other person says, it actually carries embedded spyware that leads you to purchase sites for their affiliates software.

Step 2:
Go: start/ control panel / performance and maintenance / administrative tools / double click on services.
In their it will show you a list of processes on your computer. Double click on any you don't want to run automatically and either disable them or change them to manual. About 25 - 30 processes is normal for a computer. Good luck

Find out what processes are taking up the most memory and eliminate them. From my experience, Norton's is more of a nuisance then it is a help, I would first remove that from the computer.

You want the least amount of icons possible in the task tray (by the clock). I have 4, my antivirus, Wi-Fi, Speaker and the USB icon. Every icon listed uses memory.

If the processor is running at 100% constantly, you need to identify what process is hogging that and also eliminate that. More ram will be beneficial, but you might as well try and clean up your computer first.

Clear your temporary internet files, cookies, etc, and reset the web settings. Then download Ad-Aware and Spybot. They both will find things the other left.

These are the steps I would use to speed up a computer.

If you have games, you could well do with more Ram. Try atleast 1 Gb and your machine will fly. Besides this , try de frag utility that comes with windows , also do ctrl+ alt+ del and take a look at all the programs that are running, do a web search for each and check what app uses them . You will probably find a lot that are not required and simple load up at start up. To get rid of those that you dont want to load up at start up, go Start>> run >> msconfig then un check the ones you dont want and exit. You should have a much faster machine now.

The biggest performance gain at the cheapest price will be to upgrade your RAM. I suggest 1GB. RAM is cheap and you wil be amazed at how much faster things run.

Also (in the following order):
1) Scan your system for viruses and spyware with a good anti-virus product. Make sure you have the latest virus signatures/definitions updated before scanning.
2) Download a free (limited test period) Registry Cleaner from download.com, clean your registry.
3) Uninstall any software you don't need.

Install the RAM and you'd be amazed at the speed gain.

Spybot is a must. Defrag your HD. Update your Norton and run your virus check. MORE RAM. Alos, your processor is way out of date, you may want to invest in a new PC!

Check the process list and see which process is taking the most processor time and investigate it to see what's going on. (My hubby answered this, I hope you figure it out.)
