Protecting intellectual property costs money, about $40. But there is a way you can protect it without going through that process.
Hand write a copy of the poem, then mail it to yourself via Registered Mail with a return receipt requested. It will come back to you, sign for it. In a few days the return receipt will come back to you via the mail. Take both the envelope and the return receipt and store them in a safe place. DO NOT OPEN THE ENVELOPE!!!
Should anyone claim authorship of your poems you can take them to court. And the sealed envelope will be opened in court. The date stamps will verify that the poem was in your posession at a certain time.
It's not as iron clad as a copyright but it will help until you can get the paperwork processed to get the government copyright.

Your poems are copyrighted right now. Anything that you write on a piece of paper is automatically copyrighted to you. You do not have to send it anywhere. If you would like to be safe, one cheap way of copywriting your stuff with some sort of proof that you wrote it is to seal it in an envelope and mail it to yourself. Make sure that you keep the envelope because that gives you the copyright date. But, seriously, your poems are copywritten right now all you have to do is write the little C thing, your name and the date at the bottom of the paper for formality.

You can hire a copyright attorney and get him/her to handle the legalese. Depending on where you live/who you hire, this might cost you about one thousand dollars or so, U.S.
