I see a lot of good anime already listed, so I'll give you a few older ones to look up. First, there are two Vampire Hunter D movies, and I think they are both worthwhile, although they have nothing other than title to do with each other, as far as I can tell. If you can find the fan-sub version, Bastard! is absolutely hilarious. Ranma 1/2 is a classic. There is also El Hazzard, Neon Genesis Evangelion (the ending is kind of dumb, but the series is well worth it), Escaflowne, Slayers, Wing Gundam (also known as Gundam W), Macross Plus, Ninja Scroll, and many others that I can't remember at the moment. There is so much cool anime out there that no matter what you like, you can probably find plenty.

My favorite movie in anime is "grave of the fireflies", it is a touching story of a brother/sister in japan after the war... the anime is beautifully done.
My favorite series for fun is Ranma 1/2, a story of a boy & father who fall into cursed ponds in an ancient training grounds... now he turns into a girl when doused with cold water, & his father becomes a panda in the same circumstances.

Full Metal Alchemist...Naruto....I don't really like Inyuasha because it keeps going ON and ON, but lots of people like it. Ghost in the Shell's okay, and Bleach. Bleach is one of those things you just have to like.

trigun is good at first but gets pretty weird at the end
