If a friendly, well-liked individual suddenly becomes antisocial and quiet, I'd worry about depression. I wouldn't think that the popularity caused it, unless it's something like a sudden realization that the whole scene was full of shallow relationships or something. Yeah, I'd be more likely to assume depression or something serious happening that you weren't aware of. I know lots of rape victims tend to draw inwards after such a traumatic event. Not that that's a safe assumption to make, but I'd talk to the person about what's up.

Hmm.....If I remember my Personality Theory class correctly, introversion is a inherited trait, and stable over time, not something that changes. Not all depressed people are introverts, and not all introverts are depressed, first of all.

However, depression is an illness, caused by internal imbalances (lack of serotonin perhaps).

So anyone can get depressed, it doesn't matter how popular they used to be, it has to do with neurotransmitters and hormones and the like and can happen to anyone at anytime.

while it could be a maturing, not feeling the need to be extroverted all the time, or it could be a temporary response to a current event it life, it also could signal a major problem. perhaps the person has become depressed, and might need outside help to deal with it,,,, especially if the person in in their twenties, that is the age that past problems not dealt with, and also biological imbalances, tend to show up, manifest, etc ,,, any major change in personality and habits should be looked into, if it last more then a few weeks,,,,, or isnt directly related to a life crisis (death of loved one or close friend, divorce, loss of girlfriend/boyfriend etc)

good luck

it depends upon the person and personality.
the popularity might have created distance from the peer group of the individual. hence the change in the relations might have made him introvert.

Maybe you're an introvert trying to be an extrovert in the extroverted world? Or you're just depressed...because of something.

What does popularity have to do with it? People want to be themselves, and they react emotionally to many things, not just their popularity level. Many people dont care about popularity at all.
