Hercules (Roman) is also known as Heracles (Greek). A good equivalent of Hercules would be Kintaro from Japanese legends.

"A humongous toddler who was able to defeat a bear in sumo wrestling. He usually carries an axe on his shoulder and rides the bear he tamed. Bobbed hair and square apron indicate he's still a baby. (Kintaro is actually a baby name for a famous warrior, Sakata Kintoki.) Images of Kintaro are often displayed for the Japanese holiday Boy's Day by parent's wishing their boys to be healthy, strong, and successful."

Resembles him in what way? His strength? Being half man, half god? His trials?

The only thing that comes to mind is Gilgamesh from The Epic of Gilgamesh. This story is thought to be the oldest work of literature and is from Sumerian culture i believe.

Any way, to learn more, check the wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epic_of_Gilgamesh
