It is useful to know that the months September - December are so named because the Roman calendar began with March (starting the year with the start of a new planting season). That's why the months that are now #9, 10, 11, and 12 are named 7, 8, 9, and 10.

The months named on the Christan calender are named from Roman gods and Caesars. For instance August was named after the caesar, Augustus, June was named after the godess of the sky, Juno. The calender and the month names that go along with it have been widely excepted around the world.
