Here are some thoughts:
1) You will have to get to know someone in a long-distance relationship well enough to know that you could spend the rest of your life with that person.
2) You need to get to know your fiancee's family. They will be a part of your family too, and in a lot of countries family ties are _very_ important.
3) You may have to go through a lot of paperwork to get that person into your country (or to get yourself into your fiancee's country).
4) There may be some subtle cultural differences that may not come up until after you get married, so be sure to keep an open mind.
