regional differences in the USA have all but disappeared. Does every town look the same to you? What ever happened to the mysteries of the West, the charm of the south and the industrial beauty of the northeast?

When we drive from Virginia to Florida, we can eat at the same restuarants, shop at the same stores, by the same things all up and down the coast.

I think it happened because it's comforting for most people. I know I can go into McDonald's and get this consistently okay tasting thing, or I can take a chance of "Mary's Rib Shack" and hope for the best.

However, just get off the main highway and you can see the real towns. I like to explore destinations on the internet before we go, get some info on what the locals think their town is.

I have noticed. Everywhere you go, it's the same set up with Best Buy, Shoe Carnival, Ross, Bed Bath and Beyond, a cell phone shop, a sandwich shop, Dress Barn, Wal Mart., Target and on and on....You are so right. I have seen a weak effort to try to make the archetecture blend in with other buildings, but like I said, it's weak. I think it's sad.
