There's so much in history that are potential topics...history of science, history of technology, the mindset difference of the Ionians that resulted in American culture, history of drugs and medications, the personality of Benjamin Franklin, why everyone seems to be wanting to squeeze all the 'juice' out of history and make it boring when it's filled with action, passion, blood, guts, madness, magic, and power....

History Day 2007, in June, has the theme Triumph and Tragedy. A great sub category would be any major war. You could cover the triumphs and the price that was paid for that triumph.
Good Luck!

im assuming that you're a girl from your name soooo forgive me if im wrong
i think a really neat topic would be "women's rights"
being a girl who enjoys participating in a variety of activities, i think it's a decent topic and one that you could really put a lot of feeling into just by thinking about the frustration that women back then wouldve felt when they were told by the men about all the things they werent allowed to do
playing sports such as soccer or hockey were one of the few things they werent allowed to do
they werent even allowed to vote

There are many aspects of the Civil War you could work on: weapons used would be one interesting topic.
