Why dont we give up all our rights and make G.W King for life? Wouldnt this make us a "safer" society?

You know, there are terrorists walking the streets! someone take my rights away PLEASE! They are making America dangerous.

You seem to suggest that we don't have a right to public safety. Just to clarify - that's incorrect. Our primary right is to public safety, and prior US case law makes it clear that the right to safety is more important than the right to free speech and the press (which is why speech inciting a riot can be prosecuted).

Safety is more important than right of religion (which is why religions with dangerous practices can be regulated, and adherants tried for related crimes).

Safety is more important than right of public assembly (which is why you can be arrested for blocking entrances or streets at a demonstration.)

Safety is certainly more important than privacy - any right to privacy is a non-constitutional creation. Your public actions and words have no constitutional protection. Just like this post!

Your suggestion that giving up all our rights is the only alternative is the "slippery slope" fallacy. It is obvious that 'rights' need be restricted in few and certain instances, and only those instances. Considering the pressure the administration is under to protect us after 9/11, they have done an outstanding job of selecting only the most important of changes to surveillance.

Giving up rights never produces anything better - it only makes things worse.

Giving citizens MORE rights (like CCW permits) produces a better society - one that is astronomically safer for the average citizen.

I do not like your "if then" statement. I agree with what Ben Franklin said all those years ago: "Those who are willing to give up their liberty for a little temporary security, deserve neither liberty nor security." Besides, there is no such thing as a "perfect society."

George Orwell was the last of the prophets. I am not sure what crimes I am guilty of this week, but I am sure I am guilty of some. But it is alright, because when I am locked up, we will all be safer.

At this point I'm starting to think total anarchy would be better.

Disband the government and start over.

Exactly.

Those who'd sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither. I know it's an over used quote (paraphrased in this case), but it sums it up nicely (thanks Ben).
