SIDS is probably, and I say probably because we are not sure, because a baby is positioned in a such a way that the area immediately around the mouth and nose become rich in carbon dioxide. Since infants cannot move well most of the time this can cause a form of asphyxiation. Ther are things that WE DO KNOW; 1. babies sleeping on their stomachs are 60% more likely to die from SIDS according to the American College of Pediatrics ( this is a source of much angst for older Drs. who at one time told moms to place their baby that way) 2. That for babies who are placed and sleep on their back the period of greatest risk for SIDS is from six weeks to 3 months while babies who sleep on their stomachs show an increased risk up through the fourth month. Temperature is a factor but even then the position of the baby seems to be the primary variable.

They now believe that SIDS is caused by an underdeveloped reflex which causes infants to start breathing again when they stop (apnea - which is very common in infants). The reflex usually fully develops around the time babies learn to roll themselves over (parallel development). Until then, these babies are more difficult to rouse than usual. Sleeping on their stomachs or being too warm will cause a baby to sleep more deeply, and, as a result, put them more at risk for dying of SIDS because the deeper sleep makes it more difficult for them to wake up. Unfortunately, right now there is no real way to tell whether this "rousing" area is correctly developed or not, although recently a correlation between irregularities in the placenta and SIDS has been noticed. Until your baby can flip, err on the side of caution and place him/her to sleep on his/her back, and don't over dress them while they sleep.
I've never heard of too cold being a SIDS risk, though.

It's just something that studies may have shown can increase the risk but they don't really know what causes SIDS. They are just some conditions that they hypothesize have a correlation with SIDS and if a study shows that removing the condition makes the number of SIDS babies decrease they'll tell parents it could contribute to SIDS.

New studies show that over-heating a baby can increase the risk of SIDS. Of course you don't want them to get cold either. Try to keep the room at a temperature that is comfortable to you.
In response to the first person, if SIDS is a bunch of bs, then why has the rate of it decreased since the information campaign on putting baby's on their backs to sleep started? And try telling those people who have lost babies that SIDS doesn't exist. What a selfish and uncaring response you gave.
By the way, giving pacifiers to babies is also believed to decrease the chance of SIDS. And of course, never smoke around your baby.

Who knows..There are dozens of theories about what causes sids, no answers.
I was a tummy sleeper, four of my cousins were tummy sleepers, both of my step sisters were tummy sleepers, my youngest sister was a tummy sleeper, my neices and nephews have all been tummy sleepers, my daughter was a tummy sleeper, my daughter's father was a tummy sleeper, my daughter's aunts and uncles as well as great aunts and uncles and grand parents were tummy sleepers...The one family I know of that suffered a loss from sids put their child to sleep on her back. Show me more than statistics that are only proof of what happened with those that participated in the study, it is NO indication that this will happen to every single baby born on this planet who is placed on their tummy. Certainly wasn't in MY family.
The tummy theroy is just that, a THEORY no tangible proof, goes along the lines that cats cause sids, dogs cause sids, cotton sheets on the baby's crib cause sids, synthetic sheets causes sids. exposure to the rays that come from the television causes sids. Putting a baby to sleep with a bottle causes sids, putting a baby to sleep with a pacifer causes sids. Early thumb/finger sucking causes sids...I figure you probably get the picutre
If there was a PROVEN cause there would be a cure...

It is because a baby cannot regulate its own body temperature, it cannot shiver or sweat so if it gets too hot this can result in a fever and could cause convulsions if its too cold its body could shut down.

My pediatrician said it had to do with the baby getting into too deep of a sleep when they are overheated. When they sleep too deeply they tend to get sleep apnea and stop breathing altogether.
