This is a safe link where you can download winrar for free here http://bit.ly/1r2fbsF
You can use winrar to unzip zip files (or to open compressed folder). 7zip or winzip are other softwares you can use for the same purpose but winrar is by far the best one. All these programs work in a very similar way: you just have to right click the file to zip or unzip any folders or files.
If you don't want a trial version don't worry. The trial period of winrar never ends so you can use it for free with no limitations.
With Winrar you will be able to open all the type of compressed folder like file .zip, .rar, .7z, .7zip .iso, .tar, .jar etc... that's the main reason why I recommend it.

Go there, and download the top one, which is WinRAR 3.61.. go through the process, but when prompted, ONLY select it so that you associate RAR files with WinRAR. Otherwise, even your .zip files will look like RAR files. I personally don't like the *look* of the WinRAR icon, and .zip files are better to open, so I only associated RAR files with WinRAR. After you've downloaded it, just double-click whatever RAR file you've got, and it opens up for you... there ya go.
OH! And don't worry about it being a trial or anything... it's like mIRC... so, you just download it, and after 40 days or something, it SAYS it's expired, but it still works.

I am learning here myelf but to open a RAR file you need all the component parts and then you concatenate them using a utility such as unRarX. If you have parity files they can make up for damaged and missing parts. Most of the time you can get the .par2 files and then just use some program like MacPARdeLuxe that just does everything and it comes out as one big file.

It's compressed, like a Zip file. Download WinRAR to un-rar it.

Get a copy of WinRAR
http://www.download.com/WinRAR/3000-2250-10007677.html?part=dl-winrar&subj=dl&tag=button
install it, then just drag your .rar file over the WinRAR icon that installs onto your desktop.
.rar is just like a .zip file - so when you open it, you'll see a list of the files in the .rar "package" - from there you just extract them all into a folder of your choice and have at it...
