I'd say it has something to do with the inner self and the outer self--how you think of yourself and how you present yourself to others. Any others' thoughts?

dealing with the emotional aftershocks of calling Hassan a thief...right after watching him raped by the bully Assef...and doing nothing to help him...

dealing with regret, remorse, shame and guilt...
