People don't speak and write properly any more because they are generally too lazy. It takes longer to type a grammatically correct sentence than to take short cuts. The same applies to the spoken word.

It's just laziness.

People are ready to blame this on technology and slang. We must start taking responsibilty for our actions.

There's no better way to communicate and avoid misunderstandings by speaking and writing properly.

There is no proper way to speak. There are only arbitrarily designated standards of grammar that really have no influence on the ways that people adapt their languages for use in everyday life. People who complain about the degradation of language usually do so because of:

a) generational differences - Newer generations use language in new ways that are not always intelligible to older generations.
or
b) national affections - In places like the US where race and ethnicity are not viable ways of establishing a national identity - because we come from everywhere - people fall back on cultural similarities like shared language; thus the prominence of Spanish in the US seems to many English speakers to be an affront to the United States.

Changes in language are brought about when there are: a) new things to communicate about (i.e. technology), b) new ways to communicate (i.e. keyboards and Internet), and c) cultural exchange (i.e., American English gets many of its words from Spanish and Native American languages).

The unfortunate thing is that we, as in our society, are evolving in a way that is forcing us to have swift, to-the-point, communications. Everything moves much faster now and that includes our language. Spelling is being re-invented by a new generation that is primarily dictated by pop culture. I, for one, shun this lackadaisical form of expression, and still prefer to explore good old fashioned English! Just keep in mind that the younger generation growing up today is under a lot of pressure to conform, and it takes a very strong individual to swim against the tide.

I think it's a combination of slang taking over and maybe a little of the way people are brought up. What bothers me the most is people using improper language...double negatives, etc. I know a lot of adults who have children who don't use the correct language, so of course their kdis will speak that way, too. Bugs me!

language is constantly changing and always has. For example: During the Revolutionary War, Americans changed many spelling. Colour/color or Centre and Center. Then then add other cultures and technology.

I think it's a mixture of slang taking over. I'm a stickler for correct english, and I still could never stop my kids from saying "can I "lend" £5 please?" or "I won you!" (No - I lend YOU borrow and you WIN a prize" or the even more annoying thing these days of pronouncing "f" instead of "th" ie Smiff not Smith.

I guess street cred takes precedence over not sounding like a thicko!

Simply that schools in the UK combine the English language and literature subjects together.
In my day they were seperate subjects.
Kids do not read books any more, hence poor grammer and spelling!

Because of the growth of tecnology and modernity. Believe me it is going to get worse. Soon they will have to re-write the english dictionary.
