Filing bankruptcy is not so easy anymore. Chapter 7 bankruptcies (wipes out all debt, clean slate) are becomming a thing of the past, and chapter 13 reorganization is becomming much more common. Chapter 13 will stop all garnishments, but then they are paid indirectly through a trustee of the courts, over time. Your paycheck will still be garnished, but for one monthly payment rather than multiple garnishments.
The bottom line is that you have to pay your debts, one way or another. You would be much better off getting a second job and biting the bullet for a few years until you pay it all off yourself, than to have the eternal "black spot" on your credit record.

Filing bankruptcy will stop garnishments, but laws are tougher now. First, you have to go to a credit counselor, then you can file Ch. 7. When you file Ch.7, it's against ALL your debts. You cannot pick and choose which you keep. If you own a house, it will be taken. If you owe on a vehicle, you would most likely have to turn it back in.
