i can hear the motor running, but it won't stay up, even if i force it. i can't figure out how to get the door cover off.

I have been a mechanic for 8 years and I hear of this problem alot, the door cover( door panel ) is held on by plastic rivits and can be removed by gently prying with your fingers at an edge, be careful not to break any. the problem with the window is probably the gears inside. GM made them from plastic and they like to slip, and break. you can find the gears at Advance Auto Parts in the self help section.( near the manual window levers )

NEIL done a good job but didn't tell how to get the switches disconnected to remove the panel.

neil nailed it, tronary add libbed it, but they are correct. If in doubt have someone at a repair shop do it. Less aggrevation and you wont break a nail.

the lever might have come loose or off track. take cover panel off and check it, probably an easy fix.
