Our heart is a muscle that pumps blood. The more we use a muscle, the stronger it becomes. When we exercise and increase our heart rate, we are using our heart muscles more. Athletes have stronger heart muscles; the heart can pump more blood with every beat so they don’t have to beat as fast to pump out the same amount of blood.

Heart rate increases during excosize so that the blood can get to all of the body faster since you are buring up the oxygen that the muscles need.

Muscles require more oxygen when in use and the heart delivers oxygen rich blood to them and the lungs re oxygenate blood. That's why you breathe hard too.
