The explanation can be long, but the easy way to explain is the modem takes an analogue signal from the phone lines and turnes it into digital signal for your computer (and vice versa to send out going traffic). More details at wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modem

Hi,
A modem is a tool for sending data from one pc to another and is for comunication purposes.
Also there are different sorts of modems some called Dialup, broadband and wireless modems.
Each modem that you select work on speed for example, a dialup modem runs at a maximum of 56 kilobites of data per second. A brodband modem starts at 256 megabites of data per second and goes to 1gigabite of data per second. The wireless modem is the same as the broadband modem but has no wires to your PC so you can operate your pc anywhere in your house especially good with a laptop computer.
An explanation of kilobites, megabites means that firstly a kilobite means that a thousand bites of information per kilobite.
A megabite means that one thousand kilobites per megabite.
Then there is Gigabite which is one thousand megabites per gigabite of information.
All confusing hey!!!!!
Hope this helps for more info you can go online to telstra for further information or your service provider...

MOdulator/DEModulator =MODEM
It modulates or encodes the digital bits of data created on your computer and sends it over the Internet and when reached by another computer the bits are then demodulated or decoded so that the computer can process it.

Its what your computer uses to connect to the internet. If you have Highspeed fulltime internet access, you will not be using it, but you still need it in your computer.
