So when I watch it flush with the tank lid off, the chain lifts the stopper from the tank and the stopper stays lifted. The chain is loose in there, and jiggling the handle does nothing. I have to reach in there and tap the lid shut, and my problems are gone. How can I make it shut on its own? There is no obvious way to remove it, the stopper has two "arms" that are attached to 2 "pegs" that stick out of the side of the tube the water runs into.

Try jiggling the handle each time after you flush it. This will close that flap. Sometimes if there is a chain in there, it may need tightened some how, but jiggling the handle may get you through till you get a chance to get new guts for it!!

You could just get the flapper valve, or the chain or the...

I'd recommend gettting the whole kit-n-kaboodle, replace it and be done with it for 10 years. newtgadge... is correct.

I've never seen anybody replace a whole toilet just for that, but she's apparently not dealing in a bunch of rent-controlled apartments either - I'd guess...

Jiggle the handle was my first thought and gave that one a thumbs-up! :)

Anyway, you are doing everything correctly
If it gets to the point where it won'y stop running then, shut the water off to the toilet using the valve that's usually on the wall under tank. Turn it back on when you need to flush it, then turn it off again. When you get tired of that, fix it.

Go to the hardware store and buy a new flapper valve (the "stopper" as you call it) The old flapper valve clips onto those ears on the overflow tube. Shut off the water with the angle valve on the wall. Drain the tank. Snap the old one off and install the new one. Adjust the chain length for the new one, turn on the water and test.

You need to replace your stopper. It's probably wore out and floating. The 2 arms should come off the pegs. As long as your chain is OK I don't know anything else

It really depends on old your toilet is, but is sounds like you need to replace the guts. This happens often because the plastic gets brittle, cracks and there is no way to repair it. You can get the whole sets at any hardware store.

But, if your toilet is older than 10 years, then replacing the guts will be more aggravation as the new parts never fit the old.

You can get a new toilet for about $100 (depending on where you live, of course) and it comes with guts. Don't forget to purchase a new wax seal and be extremely accurate when placing the toilet back on top of the floor. You have to be dead on so the seal works, because shifting the toilet over the seal destroys the seal and you'll end up with a flood of caca - yeck!

It is time to get a new flapper system. Rather than calling a plumber, you can easily do it yourself.. Turn off the water to the toilet reservoir.. then unloosen the screw at the bottom of the toilet water reservoir and it will allow you to remove the total flapper system.. Take it to HOme Depot and tell them you want a new one.. they cost about $7..I have had this problem a number of times and that is the ONLY.. surest way.. t o remedy the situation

As with all items immersed in water, calcium deposits and other minerals form on all pivot / hinged points of the internal workings.

Go to the hardware store and purchase new guts for the tank.
Approx. $10 US. Very easy homeowner repair that is done within 15 minutes.

Buy a shorter flap. Or one that has the little water tank on top that empties when you flush. No, I'm not being specious.

It is time to replace the stopper...A plumber told me he could fix it for $75.....Grrrrrrrrr, I went to home depot and explained the problem to them, they told me it would be easy to fix just find a willing participant to help me install it, which I did, total cost $8.49. ( plumbers , highway robbery. ) the instructions to it was just too simple, try it out, it wasn't hard to do at all......and a couple years later it still works
