The difference size and shape of coins is so that visually impaired people can tell them apart by touch. So if all coins had sides then they'd be impossible to tell apart if you couldn't see them.

Can't find a link that refers directly to this, but there is an article that talks about how blind people are having to get used to Euros when they travel abroad to Europe. I've put the link below in case its of use.

Coins in different world currencies always have variations in size, weight, shape and edge pattern, so that blind people can tell them apart easily with their fingers.

the coins are like that for blind people. The edges of the coins, round ones too, are all different, to enable them to identify them easily.
