Albums to own -- I'm gonna just throw a whole ton of music I love at you. Give it all a try (maybe download before you purchase it), and give the "Best Songwriters" and the "Indie Pop" choices a few chances to grow on you before you delete them. Once they grow on you, you'll need to buy them. Promise.

Best songwriters:
Tom Waits - "Closing Time" or "Alice". Odd but gorgeous.
Bob Dylan - "Blood on the Tracks"
Leonard Cohen - "Songs"

Quirky Indie Pop that has recently brought me Much Joy:
Micah P. Hinson - "Micah P. Hinson and the Gospel of Progress"
Islands - "Return to the Sea"
Andrew Bird - "The Mysterious Production of Eggs"
Sunset Rubdown - "Shut Up I Am Dreaming"
Feist - "Let it Die"

Just Plain Great Rock:
Arcade Fire - "Funeral"
White Stripes - "Elephant"
Radiohead - "The Bends"

Awesome Atmosphere:
Tindersticks - "Waiting for the Moon"
Richard Hawley - "Cole's Corner"

Best Pure Vocalists:
Neko Case - "Blacklisted"
Jeff Buckley - "Grace"
Emmylou Harris - "Wrecking Ball"
Antony and the Jonsons - "I Am A Bird Now"

Pure Genius:
Prince - "Sign o' The Times"
Nick Drake - "Pink Moon"
Radiohead - pick one "Kid A" "OK Computer"
Broken Social Scene - "You Forgot it In People"
Do Make Say Think - "Winter Hymn, Country Hymn, Secret Hymn"
Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook

The first CD I bought was Blur's self titled album. I originally bought it because my brother was a massive Oasis fan and I wanted to irritate him by playing the band's biggest rivals. I really enjoyed the music, although over time I have been listening to them less and less as I find other groups and have developed a more diverse taste in music. Interestingly, Damon Albarn has become one of the country's most accomplished musicians and formed new bands (Gorrilaz, The Good, The Bad and The Queen) which have appealed to me as my attitude to music changes.
