The United States of America is a country within the continent of North America, similar to Brazil being a country within the continent of South America. Canada, United States, and Mexico make up North America. Belize to Panama makes up Central America. All of South America is made up of countries such as Columbia, Bolivia, Brazil, and Argentina.

When we say America, we are referring to the whole American Island containing both North and South America and the Caribbean Islands...The continent then is either North or South America and the country is the United States of America but informally, when we talk about America, we refer to the USA or the country...

A country, North and South America are continents. The USA is usually the only country reffered to as America, at least in the USA, but anyone from either continents should be reffered to as Americans
