A family member unexpectantly moved out. Was not on the lease. She said she would be back in 5 days to get her belongings but did not. Picked up her mail and left. No contact, not even a forwarding address. On top of that, she put a lock on the door to her former room without asking (which violates my lease if I don't have keys to give). I could call but I'm expecting some stalling when I do.

How long is appropriate for me to wait for her to collect her belongings? I love in FL if that's relavant. I won't gint ito the details of why she left.

10-days is sufficient & didnt you have any disclosure in your contract? If shes not back in 10 -days then whatever rent she owes you make it up w/ the selling of her belongings or have it put in a warehouse , pay one month and then let it get lost. But let her know what you will do ! To have her flap them wings .

Contact your fair housing agency and ask.
Or contact a realtor who rents and leases homes.
Then, try and pry the door open or go through a window, anyway, get in the room, change the lock and keep the keys.
Move what ever is left into another part of the house where she can get to it should she decide to suddenly pops back in to retrieve the things left behind when you are not home to monitor her actions.

well, if she is not on the lease, did not leave you any way to contact her, isn't paying her share of the costs of living there, and hasn't returned after the 5 days, I doubt you'd get into any trouble removing the lock and her belongings. Though I would not suggest tossing them in the nearest dumpster unless they are a hazard to human health.
But to be sure why not call a lawyer you know and ask. Or if you don't know one, pick one at random and drop by for a quick Q&A; yep they might ask for some money but it could be well spent to have peace of mind and access of apartment.

It depends on the agreement you made with her. A verbal agreement is less binding than a written one. You would be best off giving her a call even if you do expect her to give you the run-around. Tell her you will have the lock removed by the police if she doesn't remove her belongings within 10 days. Call a renters advocate group, or a landlord (not yours) for the down and dirty on this.

Send her a note or an email, asking her to come back and take her stuff and hand over the keys, explaining your lease reasons. Give her like a week and if no response, get someone to open the door and change the lock.
