I live in Southern California, and I swear that every other car down here is a BMW. Why do so many people have them? I know for a fact that most people down here can't even afford to own a home, so how do so many people afford them? They must be in debt up their eyeballs right? Is it that many people think that by owning a BMW, that they are now high-class, and it makes them feel better about themselves, and so they must have one at any cost? I personally like BMW's, A LOT, but I like them because of the performance and body style. Driving one (once I'am able to actually afford one) would not make me feel "High and Mighty" and better than everyone else.

I love BMWs, and I own an old one. The reason: Because I own a house, therefore I can't afford a new one yet. I love BMW's engineering. I love the way it handles. BMW's strongest attributes in every car they build is the steering and suspension. It may not pull the most g's or have the fastest speeds on a slolam course, but the feel is precise and secure, not floaty.

To young punks, yes, a Bimmer is a ego boost or a penile extension on wheels. But for people who understand cars and appreciate good engineering and build quality, a BMW is worth every penny.

I don't look down on people who own other cars (hell, my car is more than 15 years old), and while I may salivate over a Ferrari or Porsche going down the street, I'm not envious or jeoloused of the owners. Without having to worry about mortgages, I would be able to buy a new M3, but in 10 years, the house will give me much better returns on my money than a new Bimmer.

Remember kids: Cars lose alue as soon as you drive it off the lot. A house's value may go up and down, but in the long run you ALWAYS come out ahead. It is still the best investment method around. Drive a used BMW and start buying houses.

Dude. SoCal is a whole other world. Might as well be its own country.

I own a BMW, love their cars, BMWs and MINIs, and I live in the Detroit area...definitely NOT a place where you would drive a BMW to impress people. Quite the contrary! Hahaha...

Best car, best driving experience, best dealer service, best resale value, and a historical heritage of passion, power, and racing all wrapped into an affordable automobile. Cannot beat that combination.

I think its not that you feel better than people but the quality of the interior and the car in its entirety really would make anyone feel better about themselves and even if BMW were not a world renowned company and was some new off the wall German Car Company I think that they would still experience a huge success because of the quality built into their vehicles.

Many Americans buy those cars for the ego boost. Also, if you live in an area with a lot of immigrants, there will be more luxury cars. Immigrants often feel like they have to prove themselves, and so they have to outwardly show their success. Indians are the worst about it, but they all do it. It's really tacky if you ask me. People who have had money for a long time are more economical.

They call it "The Ultimate Driving Machine" a perfect blend of luxury and performance. When I bought my first BMW I actually felt like a better person. It was an expensive car but not goudy like a Rolls or a Mercedes. It's simple understated elegance, it's classy and powerful. In SoCal you are what you drive. So you tell me

It is also true for Mercedes and Lexus (a lot of people don't know its a toyota!) People in SoCal judge others by what they drive and where they live. Car payments are between $500-900 a month while house payments are $2000 up. So when they can't afford a house, for the sake of their self-esteem, a lot of them will drive a luxury car to impress others. It is also instant gratification compare to saving up for a house. It is sad but true.

Since you like them, you know that they are really fun to drive. The car is responsive and hugs the road. BMWs are really well made cars inside and out and they hold their value. In LA, you people spend a lot of time in your cars sitting in traffic, right? So I say drive a car you LOVE! You'll be spending a lot of time in it. I'm in the car business and I must say that BMW owners are usually men in their 30s that are trying to look good and feel good.

Because we all are indoctrinated to think that way. It all starts as a marketing scheme, all the automotive manufacturers do it. Some of them are able to live up to the marque they try so hard to create and it becomes a doctrine. Of course it takes years to develop this way of perception in millions of people. But when they accomplish this, sales and profits go up steadily. As a result they get to make good profit and we get to drive awesome cars. We pay a little more for the feel of class, quality, looks, performance (and adrenaline)but don't you think it is a fair trade?

A lot of people, especially in SoCal think they have to impress other people. In order to do that they have to have a cool car. What they don't realize is that a car that functions well, gets good gas mileage and is comfortable to ride in is worth more in the long run towards impressing other people than a fancy car.
