Limewire CAN really destroy your computer, you have to be careful. Limewire,i recall is run on a Gnutella network which limewire has no control over therefore they cannot prevent infringment of copyright laws or in your case, viruses.

As for prevention, if you are downloading a video or program, be sure to check the size.

For example if you want to download photoshop, it would be around 150 megabytes.

now there may be other "photoshops" which are viruses but may be first on the list, do not assume it is an okay file since so many people downloaded them. check the size, it if its a low size like 455kb, that means most likely it is a virus.

same goes with music, most should be in the 3500kb+ range. dont download a file that is again a small size.

good luck.

what it does is it slows your computer down.

your processor - no matter how good it is cannot control this from happening - in fact the better the processor the worse it gets.

let me explain -
lime-wire is a file-share type of program. you can download from others while other people can upload from you - thus over working your processor.

to stop this happening you need to turn your uploads down, or even better off.

to do this all you need to do is to go into TOOLS then OPTIONS and change the settings in UPLOADS - SLOTS to zero.

after you do this you may need to restart your computer so the new setting will work properly.

this stops other people uploading from you while you download from them - thus stopping your computer working too much and speeding it up.

hoe this works - it did for me.
good luck.

All these programs have the ability to transmit viruses to your computer within the programs you download. Many of them also install unwanted software (pop ups, etc, thats how they fund themselves). If you are going to use peer to peer software, make sure you have a good virus checker (avg free is pretty good and allows you to scan each file you have downloaded before you open it).

I woudn't install it on the Administrators account, but on a limited account. Limited accounts can't install software, so if a virus gets on it hopefully will be picked up by your anti virus before it gets too far. You need one that scans your web traffic, AVG or Avast are both free and effective.
You also need to set Windows to show file extensions. If a file you want to download is music.mp3, its probably a music file. But if its music.mp3.exe then its probably a virus.

i just make sure its properly closed. ie the icon next to the clock is gone otherwise it still runs in the background. that way it doesnt affect the pc that much i dont think. as already said there is a risk of viruses but make sure you have your anti-virus on and keep it updated and 'shouldn't' have a problem. or the risk is minimal anyway.

I would avoid lime wire and all P2P software theese days. The files are full of viruses and if your AV software is not really up to date you may find yourself in trouble.
The programme itself is alledgedly free from spyware but I found the when it was installed it really slowed things down.
If your processor is less than 2.4Ghz and you have less than 512Mb of RAM you may find it really slow.
Not as bad as Kazaa but it won't take long to catch up!!

that's right it can make your computer very slow. I called my internet provider and they told me that they make money out of your computer that's how they give you free music. They got some kind of spyware but it can be fixed if you download windows spyware defender from microsoft.com
