If you want a perfect lawn, try sod instead. You have to go down an inch or so to remove your existing sod to lay new sod. The new sod won't have any weeds in it. Done right, you can even out a lumpy yard before they lay the new sod!
If you're set on seed, lay down Preen before re-seeding, following the directions on the container. It should keep any unwanted "materials" from re-emerging.

The best thing to do unless your lawn is completely overgrown with weeds is to apply a selective herbicide, which will take care of the broad leafed weeds, but not the grassy types I.E. Crabgrass, Goose grass ETC. they will have to be spot treated with a non selective herbicide. Apply these twice in a three week period, after the fourth week rent a Power rake, go over your lawn with it once and then spread your seed. after spreading the seed go over it a second time with the power rake this will work the seeds into the ground. Once this is done you should keep the ground moist, but not soggy, if the ground is to wet the seeds will mold and not germinate. If your lawn is completely overgrown by weeds, use of a non selective herbicide will kill everything in your lawn, so about the only thing that will grow after that is weeds, so spreading a grass seed that meets your location is necessary.

Why do you have to kill it to reseed? Why not just add some grass seed to the spots that you want. But be sure to cover with soil otherwise the birds will eat it.

you are able to certainly seed precise over the becoming backyard. i could rake the section first to melt the perfect of the soil. positioned your seed down and then rake gently. the main serious factor is water. I examine that after the seed starts to sprout, if it dries out this is going to die. If does not could desire to be watered heavily, yet will could desire to be moist down a number of situations an afternoon. i stumble on that doing smaller patches as a exchange of attempting to do an entire backyard at as quickly as works maximum suitable. you're able to desire to no longer fertilize a sparkling backyard until eventually this is been mowed a minimum of thrice. and then be very cautious to no longer use too a lot. I even have accomplished that and burned patches of grass. good success with a astounding eco-friendly backyard.

what is up with the perfect lawn? if you want it to look good and kill weeds at the same time it is going to take alot of work...
fertlize during the winter with 10-10-10....mow grass on the highest setting your mower has...this will allow the grass to grow thicker plus stronger root system....any seeds in a taller lawn will not germinate therefore in time all the weeds will die
perfect lawn....what nonsense....
just wondering if you are my neighbors that have to have everything looking like it belongs on a magazine cover.....it is all about keeping up with the jones's
it is all about common sense and that seems to have gone by the wayside with most ppl the last few years and only getting worse

Pull up the old grass, Lay down a top soil, Humas is great. Then place new sod, 10 square feet of it is around $2.90. After you lay it water every day for 2 weeks, then cut back to 2 times a day. Makes for a perfect lawn.
That's what we do in my landscaping company.
