At first I was drinking about a half a cup a day, which doc says is perfectly fine, he actually said about 2-3 cups is ok, I switched to hot coco in the morning and compleatly off of coffee around 4 months though just in case. But anyways a little like a cup or two should be perfectly fine, my first pregnancy I drank coffee every morning and even cappachinos and my daughter is 3 and fine.

Coffee is not recommended during pregnancy. Caffeine is a drug; a central nervous system stimulant. The effect is an increased heart rate, aggitation, diuresis, shakiness, etc...It does cross the uterine-placental barrier, goes through the umbilical cord and to the baby. Babies metabolize (or digest) much slower than adults so the effects will last much longer for them. Think of it this way: would you put coffee into a bottle and give it to the baby when the baby is born? If your answer is no then it is probably best to abstain until after the birth of the baby.

I was never really a coffee drinker but I do still have a soda or two a day....Most docs and most pregnancy books I've read say that two to three glasses of coffee a day are acceptable and don't have enough caffeine in them to cause harm to your baby. However, you have to remember that there is caffeine in a few things we eat such as chocolate and some meds such as Tylenol....

I haven't drank ANY coffee since I've been pregnant, well, until this past weekend. I went to The Coffee Bean and asked one of the people who worked there what decaf drinks they recommend. She said that you can order ANY coffee there and you can order it decaf!!! I couldn't believe it! I had my first White Chocolate Latte, but it doesn't mean that I'm going to be an everyday coffee drinker.

Just so you know, even decaf drinks (i.e. coffee and tea) have very small amounts of caffeine and that's why I don't drink them often at all.

I still drink one cup in the morning and my doctor said that's fine. I avoid soft drinks and chocolate so my caffeine intake is limited anyhow. I'm 9 weeks and I don't plan on stopping unless my doctors says so. I've been through this before and never had any issues. Good luck to you! Besides if I don't get my coffee my 5 year old will tell you to stay away from me :) lol

I do
my doctor said 5 cups or less is fine (no artificial sweetners though)

I would also like to point out that caffeine is a class B drug it is not a teratogen unless you take it in maternally toxic doses. Controlled studies done on animals in reproduction do not indicate risk to the fetus, but no adequate and well-controlled studies have been done on pregnant women.

Maternal caffeine intake of more than 500mg /day may be associated with neonatal cardiac arryhthmias as a feature of caffeine withdrawal and change in fetal behavior in the last trimester of pregnancy. (cocoa butter applied to the skin has been shown to do the same because of its very high caffeine content)

I drank coffee in moderation while I was pregnant. As long as you limit your intake to no more than one cup a day you should be fine. But I cut out soda completly. I think the worry is that your child may come out with low birth rate or hyperactivity. My son was almost 9 lbs. when born and he had no problems with being hyper during his infantcy. I would ask your doctor what he/she thinks first before taking advise from anyone else. Congradulations and goodluck !!!!

My little guy is almost 7 weeks old and I drank 5 -7 cups of coffee a week while pregnant. My Dr said one -two cups a day were not going to hurt the baby. But he also adviced me to watch my other intakes such as soda and chocolate.

I was told of you are going to have caffine have 3 small cups a day max. I have a Red Bull in the fridge just waiting for a day when I really need it...

I was a regular coffe drinker before I got pregnant. My doctor said that it was perfectly safe for me to have an 8oz. cup of coffee everyday (watch the sugar). It was my own personal choice to stay away from it. When I did have an uncontrolable urge(which wasn't often) I had decaf.
