NO, "however", I would not suggest doing that too often.

if you stop in the middle of a defrag, then the remaining files don't get defragmented. The defrag process not only relocates the file packets so they are contiguous, but also moves the files as far out the the outside edge of the disk platter as is possible so that the data can be accessed more quickly. I usually run the defrag program more than once as it can improve things significantly. it typically will not screw anything up if you stop before you are finished, unless you do a cold power off during the defrag.

It's not a very good idea, but nothing totally catastrophic would happen. When you defragment your computer, it collects and organizes data to make it run more efficently. It puts like things with like and puts all the empty space together. If you stop it in mid process, the data could be even more fragmented than before because your computer is in mid thought so to speak.
I would try it again when you're not really needing your computer. Say, at night when you go to bed.

Stopping it will not hurt anything.
A recent discovery I made was the program named "Magical Defrag" by Ashampoo Software. It runs in the background and whenever your computer is idle, it works to defrag your drives.
It's very affordable software and has worked very well for me.
You can download a fully functioning trial here:

Defrag can safely be stopped at any time. Careful not to just cut the power, or it wont be ecpecting you to stop, for sum reason my USB HD crapped out in the middle of a defrag, I'll never use MMC again, I now use AusLogics Defrag..

No.
But it would be a good idea to let it complete overnight if you don't want to tie up the computer.
Good Luck
